Halls were decked. Sugarplum fairies danced. Hutongs were ringing with merry voices of Santas singing.

200 Santas joined last Saturday for SantaCon. After a joyous reunion of Santas from Wudaokou and Sanlitun at Chill, Santas continued to spread cheer through Andingmen, Gulou and Houhai past midnight.

We raised over 2350 RMB for Bethel China through Santa suit sales. Thanks to the teams at Pyro Pizza and Brussels for their help raising these funds. Big thanks to you for helping make Beijingers’ spirits bright!

Last-minute Santas can buy Santa suits at Brussels and Pyro Pizza on Saturday from Santa’s helpers until we move to the next stop. Limited number of suits will be available. Proceeds will be donated to Bethel China, which provides care, education, life skills and livelihood opportunities to blind and visually impaired orphans in China.

Santa gets charitable

Three days to go and you still don’t have a Santa suit.

First don’t freak out.

Second, Santa’s helpers will be selling a limited supply of Santa suits at starting locations for 50 RMB per suit. Proceeds will be donated to Bethel China, which provides care, education, life skills and livelihood opportunities to blind and visually impaired orphans in China.

…you should procure yourself a Santa suit. Pronto.

Santa’s Rule Number 1: Santa looks like Santa. Holiday apparel is mandatory. A Santa hat is not enough. Get a Santa suit. Buy a Santa suit. Make a Santa suit. Get creative: be a Secret Santa, Tang Dynasty Emperor Santa, Panda Santa, Candy Cane, Christmas Tree, Reindeer, KTV Elf, a Chanukah Chicken.

Given today’s -2°C average temperature, you should also procure some long underwear to keep your Santa parts toasty warm, as well.

Santa’s Advice Number 6: Dress warm. Beijing winter weather can be brutal. Wear layers so you’ll be comfortable anywhere from the North Pole to the strippers’ pole.

For those without an elf to tailor a bespoke crimson suit, we suggest these solutions:

Taobao sellers can ship a suit and other festive attire in time, if you order asap.
Online retailers like this one have speedy delivery service
Superstores like Carrefour, Walmart usually have a few suits available.
Wholesale markets like Jin Wu Xing Market (金五星百货城) or Tianyi Market (天意市场) are good sources for holiday gear.
Costume rental shops, like Huan Run Costume Rental (寰润服装租赁) have Santa suits, elves, reindeer costumes for those who don’t want to commit to a purchase.

If the above options fail, don’t panic! Santas will be selling a limited supply of Santa suits at starting locations for 50 RMB per suit. Beijingers, have you been naughty or nice this year? You’ve a month to get on the Nice List before Santa visits Beijing on 8th of December, 2012.

So stop shoving people out of the way when boarding the subway train and start spreading cheer because Santa is coming to town! Here’s a reminder of SantaCon rules to prep you for the merry day:

1. Santa looks like Santa. Holiday apparel is mandatory. A Santa hat is not enough. Get a Santa suit. Buy a Santa suit. Make a Santa suit. Get creative: be a Secret Santa, Tang Dynasty Emperor Santa, Panda Santa, Candy Cane, Christmas Tree, Reindeer, KTV Elf, a Chanukah Chicken.

2. Santa acts like Santa. Be jolly. Belly-laugh. Let people sit on your lap. Sing holiday songs. Give out gifts.

3. Santa does not seek media attention or accept corporate sponsorship. “Ho-ho-ho” is good. “Publicity ho” is lame.

4. Santa doesn’t get arrested. Please remember the FOUR FUCKS:

Don’t fuck with kids.
Don’t fuck with the police.
Don’t fuck with security.
Don’t fuck with Santa.
Santa is friendly, respectful, and cooperative with everyone. Don’t fuck it up for the rest of us. Santas do not destroy property, steal merchandise, or do harm to others.

5. You must address everyone as “Santa.”

Don’t panic.

Where does Santa shop in Beijing?

International superstores like Carrefour, Walmart usually have a few suits available. One Santa reported seeing one in Olé (Raffles branch in Dongzhimen) last weekend.
Wholesale markets like Jin Wu Xing Market (金五星百货城) or Tianyi Market (天意市场) are good sources for holiday apparel.
Costume rental shops, like Huan Run Costume Rental (寰润服装租赁) have Santa suits, elves, reindeer costumes for those who don’t want to commit to buying.
If you order asap, Taobao sellers can ship suit, beard and other festive goodies in time for Saturday’s festivities.

So suit up, wear layers so you’ll be comfortable anywhere from the North Pole to the stripper’s pole and small gifts from the nice and naughty (check out Santa’s Advice for more tips)!

SantaCon 2011 will be coming to town on Saturday, 10th of December! Prepare yourself for a marathon of jolly fun from noon until late evening.

What do Santas do on SantaCon?

Santas roam around Beijing.
Santas spread good cheer.
Santas give gifts to good boys and girls.
Santas let people sit on their laps.
Santas look like Santas (check out the rules).
Santas make refreshment stops at the city’s finest bars.
Santas sing special carols.
Santas decide who is naughty or nice.
Santas may attempt performance art (no Santa Freezes this year, we promise).
Santas dance their stockings off at our face-melting end of the night destination.

Santa promised this year would be an epic SantaCon and Santas delivered (in unexpected ways).

Sounds of carols and cheerful Santas, both very young and old (er) rang from frozen Houhai to the clubs of Gongti for over 12 hours — a new Beijing SantaCon record!

Special ho ho ho goes out to the naughty Beijingers who donated their coal money to help heat a school for migrants workers’ children. Thank you.
